FILM WORKSHOPS DEVELOPED BY IMAGINE THE NEXT INSTITUTE’S FOUNDER & CREATIVE DIRECTOR JANINE JAMES

He designed the workshops for 16-23 year olds, held in the beautiful state park in Saratoga Springs, NY and half year long
on Zoom
OVERVIEW OF IMAGINE
THE NEXT
Founded and directed by Janine James, Imagine The Next Institute encourages the creation of the new by supporting conscious creatives psychologically, emotionally, and spiritually, enabling them to manifest their visions in the world as they were received, free from the fear of rejection. These conscious creatives are not here to cultivate their intellect; rather, they seek to engage their creative consciousness in order to bring original ideas and innovations that already exist in their consciousness through them so they can be embodied in our world. Imagine The Next Institute is headquartered in Saratoga Springs, New York, with popup institutes worldwide.
At Imagine The Next Institute, we believe diversity of all kinds — including ages, cultures, perspectives, and creative expression — makes for the most interesting group experiences and fulfilling outcomes. This film workshop and program is open to all ages, although the curriculum is designed to target high school sophomores through recent college graduates.
plan on a fun, collaborative, engaging weekend!
The fall weekend film workshop will incorporate both film-making and analysis. We will establish a clear understanding of filmmaking –including framing, editing, sound, and shot structure –through the viewing of film clips and attending a film screening on Saturday evening. The actual process of film-making will be carried out over the entire weekend, starting with how to achieve a viable concept through the writing of the script and creating a storyboard to the filming, editing and finished product. By the end of the weekend, you will have completed one short film. No equipment is required for the class beyond your phone and laptop. Ideally the weekend will serve as an introduction to the very inspiring year long class.
A casual lunch and dinner will be served, as well as a Saturday night film screening (popcorn included!)

6 MONTH LONG FILM CLASS PROGRAM INFORMATION
ON ZOOM
create your own films during this year long class - it will be collaborative, supportive, and very hands-on
JANUARY 16 – MAY27, 2023
MONDAY EVENINGS,
6:30PM-8:00PM
Don't miss this rare and very special opportunity to study with us for a year-long class! This course will focus on both film analysis as well as on active film-making. We will begin by examining a number of films – including framing, editing, sound and shot structure – to establish an idea of filmmaking. Written responses will be required as will in-class discussion.
This analysis will be done hand in hand with the actual process of film-making, starting with achieving a viable concept through writing scripts and creating storyboards, all the way to the filming, editing, and screening processes. By the end of the program, you will have completed at least three short films, including a dramatic short, documentary, and music/sound-based work.
We will meet every Monday evening on Zoom, starting on January 16, 2023, as well as for the in-person fall, winter and spring workshop weekends. Your individual and online time mostly will be spent on the viewing and analysis of films, while group discussions and production work will be the focus of our in-person sessions, as well as attending a film screening on Saturday evening. There will be an in person weekend in November and March, open only to those taking one or both semesters in the year long class. This is a hands-on opportunity to get feedback from Don and your classmates and continue your film studies while aligning with the class syllabus.
No equipment is required for the class beyond your smartphone and laptop. At the end of the first term, you can opt out if you decide not to participate in the Spring term. However, those who continue the year- long program will end with at least one film to add to your portfolio.
ABOUT FILM EXPERT
DON GIBSON
Don Gibson has worked as a film teacher for some 20 years, much of that time in Manhattan at United Nations International School and Leman Prep. He also has worked for many years as an examiner with the International Baccalaureate® (IB) Program in Film, which has been an excellent tool in developing his work as a teacher.
“My greatest strength as an educator is in my active
engagement with other people's opinions and ideas,” notes Don. “I believe in teaching through self-awareness –engaging in discussions that lead toward understanding rather than telling someone what to do. In concrete terms, rather than have you adhere to my advice, I instead rely on your understanding coming from the experience of personal analysis along with the creative process.”
Don believes the best way to develop a cogent point of view in film is through in-depth readings of films. In his workshops and course curriculum, he and participants examine films such as Castaway (Robert Zemeckis), Punch-Drunk Love (Paul Thomas Anderson), The Celebration (Thomas Vinterberg), Loveless (Andrey Zvyagintsev), No Country for Old Men (Joel & Ethan Cohn), and many other inspiring works.
